Dr Thomas Manjooran, a highly respected physician whose medical career spanned more than five decades, passed away peacefully in 2026 at the age of 90.
Born in Cherai, Kerala, in 1936, Thomas was the youngest of nine children—eight brothers and one sister. The family later settled in Chalakudy, where they grew up in a close-knit household founded on the values of faith, hard work and service, principles that guided him throughout his life.
After graduating in medicine from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Thomas married Thankamma Elenjical of Kothamangalam. He began his medical career as a lecturer at Kottayam Medical College, where his passion for medicine and teaching quickly became evident.
Soon afterwards, Thomas and Thankamma emigrated to Canada, where he worked briefly as a surgeon before deciding to make the United Kingdom their permanent home.
It was in Britain that Dr Manjooran established the career for which he became so widely admired. As a General Practitioner in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, he served generations of patients with exceptional dedication, compassion and integrity for more than 50 years. To many, he was far more than a family doctor; he was a trusted confidant, a reassuring presence in times of illness, and a man whose kindness and humility earned the respect and affection of both patients and colleagues alike.
Following his retirement, Thomas and Thankamma moved to Ruislip, London, to enjoy their later years together. The loss of his beloved wife a few years later was a profound sorrow. In his final years, he lived in Durham, where he was lovingly cared for by his youngest son and family. Surrounded by their love and support, he spent his last days in peace.
Dr Manjooran leaves behind a devoted family who will cherish his memory: his children Earnest, Amanda and Paul; their spouses Priya, David and Jane; and his eight much-loved grandchildren—Danny, Tony, Nathan, Aaron, Naomi, Tyler, Tate and Arabella.
His life was one of quiet achievement, firm faith, selfless service, and deep compassion. Through his dedication to medicine, his commitment to his family, and his kindness towards everyone he encountered, Dr Thomas Manjooran leaves a legacy that will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
