India has taken another significant step in modernising its immigration system by extending its Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders. The scheme enables eligible travellers to use automated biometric e-Gates at participating airports, reducing waiting times and providing a faster, more convenient immigration experience.
However, before OCI cardholders can register for the programme, they must ensure that their current passport is linked to their OCI record. Those who have renewed their passport since obtaining their OCI card should first update their passport details through the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal. Without this update, the e-OCI facility will not be available, and the passport may not be recognised by the e-Gate system.
Once the current passport has been updated, OCI cardholders can download their e-OCI card free of charge by logging into the OCI Services Portal. Travellers can then generate and save the digital OCI card as a PDF on their mobile phone or computer. Although the e-OCI is not compulsory at present, it is expected to play a much greater role in the future.
The Fast Track Immigration programme is currently available at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Amritsar, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Tiruchirappalli airports. The Government of India plans to expand the service to 21 airports during the next phase of the rollout.
E-Gate Application Process
Eligible individuals looking to use the biometric e-Gates must undergo a one-time registration and approval process:

Online Application: Register on the official FTI-TTP portal. https://ftittp.mha.gov.in/fti/

Document Upload: Submit digital copies of a valid foreign passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity), a passport-sized photograph, an OCI card, and current address proof.

Biometric Enrolment: Following a preliminary background review, applicants must complete their fingerprint and facial image capture. This can be completed directly at dedicated FTI-TTP desks stationed at participating airports.

Final Approval: A confirmation email is dispatched following successful biometric mapping, adding the traveler to the “White List” of trusted individuals.
How the E-Gates Work
Approved travelers completely bypass manual immigration queues. At participating airport terminals, clearance follows a streamlined 5-step process:

Step 1: Scan your airline boarding pass barcode.

Step 2: Scan your foreign passport data page.

Step 3: Step forward when the primary door automatically opens.

Step 4: Place your finger on the biometric scanner and look straight into the facial recognition camera.

Step 5: The exit gate opens automatically, concluding your immigration clearance.
Because the system cross-references the passport with backend data, OCI cardholders do not need to scan their physical OCI cards at the gate.
Reminder to file e-Arrival Card: Regardless of fast-track status, OCI cardholders must still file a mandatory digital e-Arrival Card via the Indian Visa Online Portal https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival/ at least 72 hours prior to arrival.
No Passport Stamp
Travellers using the Fast Track e-Gates should note that their passport will not be stamped on arrival or departure. Instead, the entry and exit are recorded electronically by the immigration system.
If proof of travel is required at a later date, the traveller’s entry and exit records can be viewed through the FTI-TTP portal using their registered account.
