The Government of India has introduced the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card, a landmark digital initiative that modernises OCI services for millions of Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) across the world. The new system allows OCI cardholders to securely store their OCI card on a smartphone and present it digitally to airlines and immigration authorities, removing the need to carry the traditional OCI booklet during travel.
The e-OCI initiative is part of India’s wider digital governance programme, designed to make government services more accessible, efficient and secure for the global Indian diaspora.
A Fully Digital OCI Experience
Most existing OCI cardholders can also obtain their e-OCI Card digitally without submitting a fresh OCI application or attending a physical verification appointment.
The digital card can be securely stored on a mobile phone and presented during international travel, offering greater convenience while reducing the risk of losing or damaging the traditional OCI booklet.
Benefits for OCI Cardholders
The new digital system offers several advantages, including:
- A completely online application and document submission process.
- Secure digital access to the OCI Card through smartphones and other mobile devices.
- Faster processing and digital issuance.
- Reduced risk of losing or damaging physical documents.
- Quicker verification and smoother immigration clearance.
- Greater convenience for frequent international travellers.
For the Government of India, the e-OCI system will reduce paperwork and administrative costs, strengthen centralised record management and enable real-time verification through digital immigration systems, enhancing both security and fraud prevention.
How to Download Your e-OCI Card
Existing and newly approved OCI cardholders can download their e-OCI Card through the official OCI Services Portal. To do so:

- Save the downloaded card securely on your smartphone or other digital device for easy access while travelling.

The introduction of the e-OCI Card represents one of the most significant modernisations of OCI services since the scheme was launched. By replacing paper-based processes with a secure digital platform, the Government of India aims to make travel easier for Overseas Citizens of India while improving efficiency, security and service delivery.
OCI cardholders are advised to download their e-OCI Card and familiarise themselves with the new online system before their next journey to India.
