The Government of India has announced a one-time amnesty scheme waiving the US$25 penalty normally charged to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders who fail to update their passport details within the prescribed 90-day period.
The temporary relaxation offers significant relief to OCI holders worldwide, including those living in the United Kingdom, who have missed the deadline for updating their passport particulars.
The waiver provides an opportunity for OCI cardholders to regularise their passport records without paying the usual late penalty.
The amnesty specifically covers new applications submitted between 1 November and 31 December 2026.
However, according to the announcement by the Indian diplomatic mission in Melbourne, the scheme covers applications pending as of 31 October 2026, as well as fresh applications submitted between 1 November and 31 December 2026.

OCI Passport Update Rules
Under existing regulations, OCI cardholders are required to update their passport particulars on the official e-OCI portal within three months (90 days) of receiving a new passport.
The temporary amnesty waives the late penalty but does not remove the obligation to update passport details following the issuance of a new passport.
