August is a remarkably special month for the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom, filled with deep national pride, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant community celebrations. As the summer peaks, the community comes together to mark both India’s Independence Day and the joyous harvest festival of Onam.
Honelling India@80: Independence Day on 15th August
This August, celebrations are especially meaningful as the nation marks India@80. High Commissioner of India to the UK, P. Kumaran, has extended a warm call to action for the Indian community and friends of India across the United Kingdom to participate in nationwide movements celebrating this milestone.
Community members are encouraged to celebrate the historic occasion by honoring the courage and sacrifice of freedom fighters and reflecting on the enduring spirit of Vande Mataram. As part of the ongoing national celebrations, individuals are invited to share their participation through the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative by hoisting the national flag with pride and sharing their Tiranga selfies online.

Welcoming Prosperity: Happy Onam (Thiruvonam on 26th August)
Hot on the heels of Independence Day, the vibrant spirit of Kerala comes alive in the UK as Malayali communities prepare to celebrate Onam. Falling on Thiruvonam on 26th August, this cherished harvest festival honors the mythical King Mahabali, whose legendary reign symbolizes equality, prosperity, and peace.
Across the UK, homes will soon be adorned with intricate Pookkalam (floral carpets), families will gather to prepare and share the grand Onasadya (the traditional vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf), and cultural programs featuring Thiruvathirakali and Vallam Kali (boat race) themes will showcase the rich artistic heritage of God’s Own Country.
A Season of Togetherness
Whether it is raising the flag in unity for Independence Day or coming together for the joyous festivities of Onam, August serves as a powerful reminder of heritage, community bonds, and shared cultural pride for readers across the UK.
Wishing all readers of Kerala Link UK a wonderful Independence Day and a prosperous, joyous Onam!
