The University of Liverpool has taken a major step towards establishing its Bengaluru campus with a ground-breaking ceremony at Alembic City. The event brought together senior University leaders, UK government representatives, academic partners, and industry leaders, underscoring the University’s commitment to fostering a future-ready education and research ecosystem in India.

High-profile attendees included Chandru Iyer, Deputy British High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala, and students from The School of Raya in Bengaluru, who performed at the event.

Set to begin operations in 2026, the Bengaluru campus marks a significant milestone in India-UK higher education collaboration. Designed as a state-of-the-art learning and research environment, it will integrate global academic standards with India’s higher education ambitions. The campus will feature smart classrooms, research and innovation spaces, collaboration hubs, specialised laboratories, and Bloomberg terminals, creating a dynamic ecosystem that blends academic learning, industry engagement, and interdisciplinary research.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, said:
“It is exciting to be on site at Alembic City for our groundbreaking ceremony, the first step in building a state-of-the-art learning environment for our future students. Karnataka’s reputation as a knowledge and technology hub, and Alembic City’s vibrancy in education, research, and innovation, make this the ideal location for our campus in India.”

Chandru Iyer added:
“We were delighted by the announcement of the University of Liverpool coming to Bengaluru and are pleased to be part of the ground-breaking ceremony. We wish them the very best in delivering a world-class UK education to future generations of Indian students.”

Campus architect Ram Joshi described the design as a fusion of Liverpool’s maritime heritage with Bengaluru’s intellectual energy, transforming the old Alembic glass factory into a modern hub of knowledge and innovation.

The campus will offer UK-accredited degree programmes in Computer Science, Game Design, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, and Biomedical Sciences. Notably, the Game Design programme will be the first of its kind offered by a UK university in India, combining coding, creativity, and critical theory to prepare students for a competitive industry.

Alison Barrett MBE, Country Director India, British Council, commented:
“My warmest congratulations to the University of Liverpool on breaking ground in Bengaluru. This campus will bring high-quality UK education, industry-aligned programmes, and internationally recognised faculty to students in India, deepening academic ties and creating exciting new opportunities.”
