India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations this year were marked by strong international engagement, with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attending as Guests of Honour. Their presence highlighted the growing partnership between India and the European Union, particularly at a time when both sides are seeking stronger and more reliable trading relationships.

With global trade tensions continuing, especially between the United States and major economies, New Delhi and Brussels are moving closer towards a comprehensive trade agreement. The participation of senior EU leaders at the Republic Day celebrations was widely seen as a reflection of deepening economic and strategic cooperation.

Impressive Display of Defence Capability

The Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path featured a large-scale display of India’s military strength and preparedness. Missiles, aircraft, newly formed units, and advanced weapons systems were showcased, including equipment used during last year’s conflict with Pakistan following the attack in India-administered Kashmir.

India’s indigenous “Akash” missile system was among the key highlights of the defence display. Military bands, horse-mounted regiments, and camel cavalry units added to the grandeur of the parade, reflecting both modern capability and traditional heritage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the parade for demonstrating India’s preparedness and technological advancement, describing the nation’s security forces as “the pride of the country.”

Theme: “150 Years of Vande Mataram”

This year’s Republic Day celebrations were organised around the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram”, commemorating India’s national song and its historic role in inspiring the freedom movement.

Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Modi said the occasion inspires collective resolve to build a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). He extended heartfelt greetings to citizens and expressed hope that national unity and determination would continue to grow stronger.

“Republic Day is a symbol of India’s honour, pride, and dignity,” the Prime Minister said, adding that it should bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to every citizen.

Strengthening India–EU Relations

Prime Minister Modi noted that India was privileged to host EU leaders António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, describing their visit as a significant step in strengthening India–European Union relations.

He said their presence underscored shared democratic values and mutual commitment to cooperation across sectors such as trade, technology, climate action, education, and security. The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to negotiations on a long-awaited India–EU trade agreement.

Celebration of Cultural Diversity

Alongside military displays, the parade also showcased India’s rich cultural diversity. Colourful tableaux and performances from various states reflected the country’s vibrant traditions, languages, and artistic heritage.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the cultural segment as a celebration of India’s unity in diversity, noting that it demonstrated how different regions and communities come together as one nation.

A Moment of National Pride

In a series of posts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister shared glimpses of the celebrations and described the parade as a powerful expression of democracy, heritage, and national unity.

“India celebrated Republic Day with great enthusiasm and pride,” he wrote. “The magnificent parade at Kartavya Path showcased the strength of our democracy, the richness of our heritage, and the unity that binds our nation together.”

This year’s Republic Day celebrations not only reaffirmed India’s constitutional values and national pride but also highlighted the country’s growing global influence and strengthening ties with international partners, particularly the European Union.

The Republic Day parade offered a glimpse into the strengthening capabilities of India’s security forces. Our forces are truly our pride!
