In a significant recognition of public service and policy leadership, Telangana-born technology consultant and Labour Party politician Uday Nagaraju has been appointed as a Life Peer to the United Kingdom’s House of Lords. The King has declared his intention of conferring Peerage, acting on the recommendation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

With this appointment, Uday Nagaraju will shortly take the oath and assume his responsibilities as a member of the Upper House of the UK Parliament. The House of Lords, which plays a key role in scrutinising legislation and shaping national policy, is broadly comparable to India’s Rajya Sabha.

A prominent figure within the Labour Party, Nagaraju previously contested the North Bedfordshire constituency in the UK parliamentary elections, where he narrowly finished second, an outcome widely seen as reflecting his growing influence and grassroots support.

Born into a middle-class family in Shanigaram village, Koheda Mandal, Karimnagar district of Telangana, Uday Nagaraju is the son of Nagaraju Hanumantha Rao and Nirmala Devi. His journey from rural Telangana to the heart of British governance stands as a powerful testament to dedication, education, and public service.

Academically accomplished, Nagaraju holds a Master’s degree in Governance from University College London (UCL). He is widely respected as a writer, policy thinker, and technology expert, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for society.

He is the founder and director of “AI Policy Labs,” a think tank dedicated to examining the intersection of artificial intelligence and public policy. Through this platform, Nagaraju has worked extensively to promote inclusive and ethical AI, advocating for technologies that benefit ordinary people rather than deepen social inequalities. His efforts include building networks, policy forums, and research groups aimed at ensuring AI is harnessed responsibly for the public good in the UK and beyond.

Uday Nagaraju brings with him a long and diverse history of public service, ranging from running non-profit organisations to researching inclusive development and contributing meaningfully to AI policy debates. His career spans technology consulting, policy leadership, grassroots political engagement, and community work, reflecting a rare blend of technical expertise and social commitment.

He is well connected to several Malayalee community and other South Indian diaspora groups in the UK, Nagaraju’s elevation has been warmly welcomed across communities.

Following the announcement of his peerage, congratulatory messages poured in from organisations and leaders. The Telangana Association of the United Kingdom (TAUK) said in a message:
“Congratulations Mr. Uday Nagaraju on your peerage and elevation to the House of Lords (UK). On this distinguished honour, your elevation to the Lords is a testament to your significant contributions. Wishing you success in your vital work.”

Aarien Areti, Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and a close friend of Nagaraju, described the appointment as “a remarkable achievement and a proud moment,” adding that it is “especially inspiring for someone of South Indian Telugu heritage” and reflects dedication, service, and excellence.

The Telugu Association of London also extended heartfelt congratulations, calling the appointment “an inspiring milestone for the entire Telugu community in the UK” and wishing him success as he takes on an important role in shaping policy and governance.

Councillors Kaza and Aaditya Kaza joined others in congratulating Nagaraju on his elevation to the House of Lords, highlighting the broader significance of his achievement for British Indians.

As Uday Nagaraju prepares to take his seat in the House of Lords, his appointment represents not only a personal milestone but also a moment of pride for the Indian diaspora, particularly the Telugu and South Indian communities.
