
The festive spirit lit up Charlton yesterday evening as Malayalee resident James Saviour once again hosted his much-loved Christmas Lights Switch-On at his home in 4 Sunnyside Close, Andover. Since 2013, this annual celebration has grown into a cherished community tradition and this year’s event drew its largest crowd yet.


A Joyous Gathering of Nearly 300 People
By 5:00 PM, an estimated 300 people had assembled outside James’s residence, eagerly waiting for the lights to come alive. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as families, neighbours, and well-wishers packed the street.

The ceremony began with a blessing by Rev. Fr. Canon Christopher, setting a warm and reverent tone for the evening.
Deputy Mayor Leads the Countdown

The highlight of the evening came when Deputy Mayor Cllr. Ian Jeffrey stepped forward to initiate the official countdown. As the Deputy Mayor began the countdown, the entire crowd joined in with enthusiasm.
With a unified shout of “5… 2… 1!” the Christmas lights were switched on, triggering massive applause, cheers, and joyful reactions from the hundreds gathered.
The Mayoress of Test Valley, Cllr Karen Hamilton, Cllr Iris Andersen, and members of the Andover Rotary Club were also present, adding importance and community warmth to the occasion.
The dazzling display transformed Sunnyside Close into a festive spectacle, drawing admiration from all present.

After the outdoor ceremony, guests made their way to Charlton Church Hall, just opposite James’s home, where the celebrations continued with fellowship, conversation, and festive refreshments.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Charlton Community Christmas Market, held from 3:00 PM, added even more festive charm, offering seasonal stalls and handmade gifts. Many attendees enjoyed the market before joining the main event.
Supporting Andover Rotary’s Charitable Work
In keeping with the spirit of giving, the evening supported the charitable initiatives of the Andover Rotary Club, with collections dedicated to their local community projects.

Reflecting on another successful year, James expressed his appreciation for the community’s overwhelming support:
