Kerala Link and the British South India Council of Commerce (BSICC) have joined forces to launch an exciting new initiative: the South Indian Food Network (SIFN). This is a major step to celebrate, promote, and give South Indian food culture the recognition it deserves across the United Kingdom.
The SIFN aims to build a strong and distinct identity for South Indian cuisine, honouring the chefs, restaurants, food manufacturers, and distributors who bring authentic, delicious flavours to our tables in the UK.
Why South Indian Cuisine Needs This Spotlight
While the UK’s dining scene is incredibly diverse, many feel that South Indian food has not always received the recognition its richness demands.
Think about the sheer variety: from the comforting soft idli and crisp dosa to the fiery Chettinad curries and fragrant Malabar seafood. The depth and sophistication of South Indian cooking are truly remarkable, and SIFN is here to highlight the genuine flavours, creative skill, and healthful nature of this cuisine.
The project is coordinated by Kerala Link, a long-standing community newspaper established in 1995, with crucial support from BSICC, which promotes South Indian business in the UK. It is also backed by the London Entrepreneurs Club (LEC), a non-profit organisation that supports Indian entrepreneurs and professionals.
BSICC Directors B George, Jacob Revibalan, and Pius John welcomed the move, noting that connecting professionals will “strengthen business ties, as well as showcase the richness of South India’s culinary heritage.”
Rauf Elamaram and Georgee Mathew of the LEC stated that SIFN is a “timely initiative that celebrates one of India’s greatest culinary heritages,” and provides a valuable platform for collaboration among businesses, chefs, and investors.
Chef Jomon Kuriakose, Director of Culinary at The Tiffin Box and a MasterChef UK 2018 Contestant, stressed the need for SIFN:
“South Indian cuisine is incredibly rich, diverse, and full of stories that deserve to be told. Yet, many of our chefs, restaurants, and food producers remain underrepresented in the wider UK food scene. The South Indian Food Network (SIFN) is an important step towards bringing recognition to those who keep our culinary traditions alive.”
Sam Vasanth, Founder and Restaurateur of The Grand Cholan in London, also shared his support:
“I’m proud to see an initiative like the SIFN that recognises and celebrates the diversity of South Indian cuisine. It’s a great step toward giving our regional flavours the identity and respect they deserve in the UK’s culinary scene.”
