A major proposal has been announced to formally recognise September as Kerala Heritage Month across the United Kingdom. The initiative is led by Cllr Dr Manju Shahul-Hameed, community leader and former Mayor of Croydon, who first shared her vision during Kerala cultural celebrations inspired by OnaM, Kerala’s most significant festival.
Onam, which symbolises unity, equality and prosperity, has grown beyond community gatherings to being celebrated by businesses, NHS Trusts and civic organisations across the UK. This recognition reflects the increasing impact of Kerala’s values and the contributions of its diaspora to British life.
The proposed Kerala Heritage Month aims to provide an annual opportunity to celebrate the community’s rich culture, enterprise and vital contributions to health, social care, education, business and public service. With many organisations and community leaders already lending support, the month will highlight the Kerala diaspora’s important role in strengthening boroughs, cities and communities nationwide.
“Kerala Heritage Month is about more than cultural pride. It is about recognising the extraordinary contributions of the Kerala community in shaping Britain’s social, civic and economic life. Through Kerala Heritage Month, we can celebrate heritage while building unity and opportunity for all,” said Cllr Dr Manju Shahul-Hameed.
A Call for Community Support
Community groups, voluntary organisations and leaders are invited to join the movement and add their voice to the call for Kerala Heritage Month. Expressions of support can be sent to shahulhameedmanju@gmail.com
, as organisers are currently collating partners and supporters to shape how the initiative will be celebrated across the UK.
On social media, Dr Shahul-Hameed reaffirmed her vision:
“I first announced this vision at a Kerala Festival in London and yesterday at KCWA Trust’s Onam celebration at Fairfield Halls. Onam reminds us of unity, equality and prosperity—values that enrich our diverse society.
Let us recognise September as Kerala Heritage Month: a time to celebrate culture, enterprise and the community’s vital contributions in health, social care, business and public life. With the support of hundreds of community and voluntary organisations, this is our chance to honour the Kerala community’s role in our boroughs, in London and across the nation.
I invite all community members, leaders and friends to champion Kerala Heritage Month so we can celebrate, recognise and build stronger communities for the future.”
The call has already gained attention, with community members urging national recognition and support from figures including the High Commission of India in London, Mayor of London, Sojan Joseph MP, and Labour Leader Keir Starmer.
If approved, Kerala Heritage Month will not only celebrate the achievements of the past but also inspire future generations to carry forward Kerala’s enduring values of inclusivity, service and innovation.
